Thunder Bay and Kenora Rapid Expansion Projects

Bird Construction has been awarded a contract by the Ontario government to complete infrastructure expansion projects at the Kenora Jail and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. These new additions will address capacity pressures and provide additional space for effective programming and improved services.

The expansions at Kenora Jail and Thunder Bay Correctional Centre will leverage site and modular construction solutions through Bird’s valued partnership with Stack Modular. Our teams in Manitoba and Ontario will bring together experience and local expertise, reaffirming our commitment to build meaningful partnerships with regional communities including engagement with local Indigenous communities.

To date, our team has participated in engagement sessions for the project led by Infrastructure Ontario. Bird has also conducted Open Houses and Project Overview engagement sessions to gather design input and share schedules and potential opportunities for project participation.

Indigenous Engagement Plan

Bird has developed a comprehensive Indigenous Engagement Plan to involve local Indigenous communities. Providing employment opportunities for local Indigenous talent is a pillar of this plan. and building respectful relationships and promoting open communication and cultural awareness is fundamental to both Bird’s business as well as the mutual success of our projects and these communities.

Bird’s Indigenous Engagement policy has been translated into Ojibway and Cree and will be posted at all worksites to show respect for local languages and culture. The policy is also currently being translated in to Michif and will be posted when available.
