Vale Smelter & Refinery Complex

Located in Copper Cliff, Ontario, the Vale Clean AER Project at the Vale Smelter and Refinery Complexes was driven by stringent environmental regulations and targets. Initially, the converter off-gas containing SO2 and dust was routed to remove dust prior to being dispersed from the stack. New environmental standards required the process to be changed to allow for the SO2 containing off-gas be conditioned upstream and have the SO2 removed prior to the acid plant. Various mechanical, piping, electrical, civil and structural scopes were included in the project.

The team was responsible for the structural scope of fabrication and installation of building structural steel, platforms, exterior supports, stair towers, as well as pipe and electrical supports. Mechanical works included the installation and assembly of fiberglass, gas cooling tower and onsite vessel splicing, wet gas fan, process pumps and ducting throughout the entire plant. The piping scope included the fabrication and installation of piping including tempered water, safety showers, natural gas and service water, process piping such as cooling water, instrument/plant air, caustic soda and weak acid, as well as pipe insulation on pipelines as required.

Electrical work was vast and included the installation of equipment such as transformers, automation equipment, medium voltage switch gear, power factor capacitators, heat tracing, receptacles, the communications system and overhead power line. Architectural finishes rounded out the project, and included the installation of masonry walls, cladding, insulation, roofing, and acid brick lining.
