Stuart Olson was selected as the Design-Builder for the redevelopment of the RBC Convention Centre. In the heart of the city, the RBC Convention Centre has been hosting meetings, conventions and tradeshows since 1975. This expansion will double the size of the current convention centre to accommodate large conventions, trade and consumer shows, making it the fourth-largest publicly owned convention centre in Canada.
The three-storey addition will add 340,000 sq ft to the existing 492,000 sq ft facility. The main floor will include a 36,499 sq ft lobby, concourse and registration area, as well as a 26,000 sq ft ballroom. The ballroom can also be divided into four separate meeting rooms, acting as an independent convention centre.
The third floor will boast 147,100 sq ft of exhibition space that can accommodate in excess of 700 booths, and a 46,000 sq ft City Room, which will be built over York Avenue. The City Room will feature a full wall of windows on both the east and west sides, and will accommodate 2,800 people for a dinner event, or 217 exhibits for tradeshows. A
150-stall, one-level underground parkade will also be constructed underneath the building.
