North York City Centre Galleria Renovation
The North York City Centre Galleria project at 5150 Yonge Street is located between two busy office towers. Renovations were completed while maintaining subway access and interior operations including several retail stores, library, hotel and a food court. The 45-foot-high galleria atrium required Bird to complete the removal and replacement of all overhead lighting and finishing the exposed ceiling structure. Also required was demolition and removal of existing floor tile, installation of 25,000 sq. ft. of new large format tile and replacement of storefronts with new steel framing, structural glazing system and stainless steel finishes. The existing entrance was removed and replaced with new entrance and revolving doors, stainless steel features and signage. The concourse level work included removal and replacement of 15,000 sq. ft. of floor tile.

Challenged by maintaining building operations, security and public safety during construction, the renovations were completed in several phases, after-hours and weekend shifts were scheduled from November 2013 to July 2014. Bird maintained an organized approach, strong communication and regular updates with the owner, consultants and building operations staff to ensure the project’s success.
