University of Alberta – Central Academic Building Phase II

The Central Academic Building (CAB) is centrally located in North Campus at the University of Alberta and is one of the highest student traffic areas throughout the entire UofA campus. It is linked directly to the South Academic Building to the south and Chemistry Building to the North. This phase of the project centered around the revitalization of the main floor with a focus on the ceilings and walls (A/M/E), the flooring, FFE, and the lower-level washrooms (re-finish in place). The objective was to develop new areas where students/staff can meet, relax, take meals, study, and generally interact and engage with each other.

Bird was brought on as the Construction Manager and worked collaboratively with the Office of the University Architect, Ancillary Services, and the Project Steering Committee to advise, develop and guide the design and renovation of the common spaces. Bird previously completed the lower level of the CAB project, which was an overwhelming success leading to the 2nd phase of the project. The project commenced in spring 2021 and was completed by the end of August 2021 in time for students to return to the UofA Campus for the Fall 2021 semester.
