Lloydminster New Mechanical Wastewater Treatment Facility
Bird, as part of a joint venture with Chandos, has been awarded the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model contract to complete the engineering, design, and construction of a new mechanical wastewater treatment facility for Lloydminster. This is the first project of its kind to be performed using the IPD model in North America, and this model improves collaboration, enhances innovation, and reduces waste.
The facility will incorporate or repurpose all the existing infrastructure on the site and is designed to meet Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (SWSA) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) requirements. The new facility will be able to treat up to 42,000 cu. m of wastewater per day, with an average load of 25,920 cu. m/day.
The mechanical water treatment facility is centered around a membrane bioreactor (MBR), and includes large partially buried concrete tanks for the primary clarifier, equalization and fine screen chambers, bioreactors, and the membrane tanks. Process equipment will be housed in a pre-engineered process building. Bird will undertake work on the process wing (1,555 sq. m), headworks building renovation (110 sq. m), and the administrative wing (366 sq. m), amongst other responsibilities. As part of the joint venture, Bird will be self-performing a number of components including concrete, process mechanical, process electrical, construction management, and subcontractor management. As part of the value proposition, the team will continuously innovate and apply Lean principles to ensure process and flow efficiency, and minimize waste in all forms.
